With the new Blade 15, which was launched earlier this year, Razer finally managed to compete in terms of what makes a great gaming laptop. Sturdy construction, sleek body, elegant design, long battery life, thin bezel, 144Hz screen, and internal enough to play the latest games. What distinguishes Blade 15 from the competition is the details. The aluminum body is the most sturdy and resistant to all the laptops we've tested lately, and with a size of about half a millimeter, it's also the thinnest. Of course, the half-millimeter difference is largely negligent in terms of perception - the more impressive is the overall feeling of a solid body, which according to Razer is CNC milled from an aluminum block. Opening the clamshell, the touchpad feels bigger than its peers, and the keyboard is flanked by large speakers.
The keyboard, however, gives me some problems. The button itself feels nice to press, perfect for typing and playing games. My problem comes with the keyboard layout, which besides losing the number keys (forgiven, given space constraints) reposition the up arrow button between the right shift and the forward slash. If you are accustomed to using right shifts + slashes for question marks, be prepared to screw up until you adjust to the new layout. Our other problem is with the touchpad - its large size feels great to use on its own, but caused me to accidentally knock when typing several times.
Razer cultivates its brand with a game-oriented mentality, and it shows the performance of the Blade benchmark here. Although the design is slightly thinner than its counterparts (17.2mm thick compared to 17.7mm MSI GS65 thickness), Blade 15 has a slightly better performance in our game benchmarks. This averages 92 fps on the Rise of the Tomb, a three-part Raider benchmark, measuring 144 fps in Mountain Pass, 83 fps in Syria, and 78 fps in Geothermal Valley. That's much closer to our average zero fps 99 fps (supported by the GTX 1070 non-Max-Q) in RotTR, compared to the scores of the mid 80's from the GS65 and the 15X Gigabyte Aero. Total War: Warhammer II and Ghost Recon: Wildlands also produce scores either in-line or slightly up from GS65 and Aero 15X - 59 and 44 fps respectively - although the difference is more in the realm of three to four frames like opposing 10-plus .
Blade pulled the score, even though it was very small, thanks to the steam room cooling solution that was connected to the CPU and GPU. It maintains the internal from slowing under a long load, and more importantly keeps the outside of the Blade so that it is not too hot to handle during extended game sessions. After a long stress test, I measured the temperature of around 130 F at the hottest point - above the keyboard - but the area around the WASD button remained in the 100 F climate region. The bottom, of course, warmed to a certain point. it's not convenient to use in your lap, but we have never met a gaming laptop which is not the problem.
Blade 15 brings everything we want on a gaming laptop, on one of the best design bodies we've ever seen. The build quality is the best, and gaming performance is suitable - the disadvantage, of course, is price. Blade 15 starts at $1,899, but that's for the GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU and 60Hz screen. The GTX 1070 Max-Q model, as we tested it, starts at $2,399, with a more expensive option if you want a larger SSD or 4K panel. Blade is probably the best-looking gaming laptop we've ever tested, but its almost the same performance can be obtained from the GS65 Stealth MSI at a price of a few hundred dollars cheaper. Choose your weapon wisely.
